Misty hills, beautiful valleys, and breathtaking views all around— welcome to our Darjeeling gardens. Known as the Queen of the Hills, Darjeeling is where the world’s finest teas grow. Goodricke has five tea gardens in Darjeeling that produce world-renowned teas, each one steeped in history.
The first tea bushes at the Thurbo gardens were planted in 1872, with slopes rising from 2500 ft to 6000 ft above sea level. Thurbo teas are highly valued for their rare and authentic Darjeeling flavour, bright colour and mellow, distinctively sweet after-taste. The Badamtam garden stretches across three mountain ridges and extends from the Lebong Valley right up to Sikkim. It is completely organic and conforms to the highest standards of green certification. The Barnesbeg garden, planted by Christian Barnes between 1858 and 1877, enjoys a cool, balmy climate and produces exquisite green and black teas.
Margaret’s Hope is one of the largest tea gardens in Darjeeling, and blenders worldwide use its tea in their blends. The garden also houses a Salamander Lake, a natural habitat for salamanders and attracts researchers from all across the world. The Castleton garden’s emerald slopes border Kurseong town, making it the only garden within civic limits. The garden is divided into many sections, with each one retaining its traditional local name like Bhalu Kop (Bear Cave), Dhobitar (Laundry Line), Baseri (Shelter), and Jim Bacha (Jim’s Child).
Lush and green, fed by the mighty Brahmaputra River, India’s largest tea growing state of Assam is well-known for its premium teas. Goodricke’s twelve Assam tea gardens are landmarks in the story of tea and produce full-bodied teas with lush aromas, robust flavours, and vibrant colours.
The pioneer Col. Sir James Buckingham C.I.E., developed the Amgoorie Garden where the CTC machine was developed in 1931, revolutionising tea manufacture forever. Harmutty, one of the oldest tea gardens in Assam, is named after Queen Hiramati, wife of King Arimatta, whose kingdom is thought to have encompassed lower Assam. The remnants of the queen’s burial ground are still present next to the middle Bungalow.
The Borbam Garden was established in 1865 and is situated on the South bank of the river Brahmaputra, close to the Nagaland border. The garden has two divisions—Baghjan (a region home to leopards!) and Hulwating. The Orangajuli Gardens are named after the Orang people who live by the juri (a small stream in local dialect) and who comprised the workforce when the first tea seeds were planted here in 1894. Rich natural forests surround the Dejoo Garden, resulting in a naturally pest-free, healthy environment for growing tea.
Among our other tea gardens in Assam are Nonaipara, Sessa, Borpatra, Koomber, Harchurah, Bargang, and Coombergram.
Down the Himalayan plains, the Dooars region is abundant in flora, fauna, and mesmerising landscapes. Our twelve Dooars gardens produce premium orthodox and CTC teas that are treasured around the world.
Bordered on three sides by rivers, the Leesh River Garden offers views of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga peaks. The garden runs a skill development centre for local women in the area to help them earn a livelihood through craft. Danguajhar Tea Garden is one of the largest producers of fine CTC Tea and also has a dairy research farm that is exploring means to commercially produce milk while being sensitive to the cows and their offspring.
Set up in 1881, the Meenglas Garden was completely modernised in 2007 and has been HACCP certified since 2008. The Chalouni Garden, established in 1885, has many rain-fed stream lets flowing North-South that lace its body, meandering and dancing to produce a musical symphony to its sylvan beauty and charm.
The Jiti Garden lies in a serene valley bordering the foothills of the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. It is the only garden in Dooars geographically located in a valley.
Among our other tea gardens in the Dooars are Aibheel, Chulsa, Hope, Gandrapara, Lakhipara, Kumargram, and Sankos.
